Writing Work for Self – Creating a Solo Performance Piece with Yolanda Mercy

Workshop Overview:
This focused workshop is designed for artists who want to create and perform their own original work. Learn how to write a compelling solo performance piece that reflects your unique voice and experiences. Under the guidance of Yolanda Mercy, you’ll explore how to develop a personal narrative or character-driven piece and transform it into a polished performance, suitable for the theatre or festivals like the Edinburgh Fringe. Gain valuable insights into effective storytelling, stage presence, and the practical aspects of solo performance.

How do I access the session?
This workshop will take place online via zoom. You will receive a link to access the session via email roughly 3 hours before the start time.
Will I need to bring anything with me?
This is a practical session and you may be asked to write during the workshop, so please have whatever you need with you like a notebook, laptop or dictaphone.
Working online
We know that excess screen time can be difficult for some people. The session will include a comfort break roughly half way through. Please feel free to keep your video on or off depending on what setup suits you best. A recording of the workshop, and any will be made available to participants after the session.

About Yolanda
Yolanda Mercy is an Award Winning British Nigerian Writer and Performer for Screen, Stage and Audio; who works nationally and internationally. She has worked on projects in 8 countries and across 3 continents, which has gained her international recognition for her work.
Named Artist to Watch by the British Council, part of the BFI x BAFTA mentoring scheme under the guidance of Anne Mensah and a winner of the prestigious channel 4 Playwright award, Yolanda is carving out a career across a variety of mediums. Her writing has featured in Huffington Post. She is a published author with Bloomsbury Books for her award winning play Quarter Life Crisis, and with Nick Hern Books for her award winning play failure project.
Her ★★★★★ productions have been described as “relatable, funny and very honest”. Comedy, music and audience participation are the key ingredients that make up her unforgettable live shows. Previous clients/collaborations have included: Disney, Channel 4, The Bridge Theatre, Soho Theatre, BBC, The Tate, ATYP, Somerset House and The British Council.

Alongside her creative endeavours, Yolanda’s bubbly personality has resulted in her being booked for interviews on platforms and programs such as BAFTA x BFI careers advice panels, BBC Radio 4 Loose Ends and Today Tix.
In addition to her creative work Yolanda is passionate about shaping the legacy of the creative industries, and has been invited onto advisory panels and boards.
