Ness: Displaced
BETA LAUNCH 21st SEPTEMBER 2025: join us for collective listening around the globe
Ness Displaced
By Zoë Svendsen & Carolyn Downing; with creative technologist Orange.
Ness Displaced is a sonic adaptation of the prose poem Ness by Robert MacFarlane and Stanley Donwood, composed in response to the secretive former nuclear test site, Orford Ness, now returned to nature, looked after by the National Trust.
Originating as an immersive performance of the poem on Orford Ness itself, Ness Displaced invites you to listen as you wander a natural landscape of your choosing: through a wood, up a hill, in a park, along a river, or by the sea…
Ness Displaced is no ordinary audio walk: via 150+ sonic zones triggered by GPS, what you’ll hear is shaped by your speed and the weather conditions along the UK Suffolk coastline, where Orford Ness is located, as though you were walking & listening there.
Ness Displaced (BETA) is free to download: all we ask is that you share with us your impressions afterwards. You can do so through the form that will pop up once you have listened.
