Jonathan Massey
Jonathan is a writer for stage and screen. With roots in both Norfolk and New Zealand. He’s still figuring out just where he fits in.
His writing examines the structures that shape us, being drawn to stories that uncover the extraordinary within the ordinary. From systemic failures to more intimate struggles, his work seeks to amplify the smallest voices and find empathy in uneasy places.
His Norfolk-set playscript Leave a Part of Yourself Here, about a community café resorting to desperate actions during the pandemic, won the Snoo Wilson Prize in 2023. His adaptation of Just William’s Luck at Underbelly Cowgate went on to tour theatres from 2018-19, earning five-star reviews, as “a junkyard War Horse… faultless family entertainment” (The List.) With other commissioned work shown at The Norwich Arts Centre, and The Bristol Watershed. His most recent play A Visit, previewed at the Bristol Old Vic’s Weston Studio in 2024 as part of The New Writing Festival.
Jonathan holds an MA in Drama Writing from Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and received his BA in Scriptwriting at The University of East Anglia.
