An Aldeburgh Doc presented by Aldeburgh Cinema at HighTide Festival 2016
Winner of the Golden Bear at this year’s Berlinale Film Festival, this devastating experimental documentary follows assorted residents of the Sicilian island of Lampedusa which has found itself bearing the brunt of the humanitarian disaster that is the migrant crisis. Director Rosi observes various locals, including a boy entering gleeful adolescence, a local DJ and harassed coastguards, and crosscuts these sequences with the experiences of migrants attempting to land on the island in grossly overcrowded boats or living out lives in makeshift camps on the shore. A haunting and powerful film, and an urgent plea for intervention.
We are delighted to present this stunning film in the presence of Anders Lustgarten, whose acclaimed play Lampedusa premiered at HighTide Festival 2015. Following the screening of Fire at Sea Anders will be interviewed in a discussion regarding the film and the migrant crisis.
