This March, HighTide kicked off its direction as a company for playwrights from or living in the East of England. We began this new initiative with an East of England Playwrights’ Gathering with an option to attend online or an in-person meeting that was generously co-hosted by our friends at the New Wolsey Theatre. We held thrilling, inspiring, and energising events that welcomed over 50 playwrights from throughout East Anglia!
The conversations were facilitated by Improbable and at each event, we challenged the writers with questions about what it means to be a playwright in the East of England and how HighTide can support their future artistic life. HighTide staff participated directly with the attendees and together they brainstormed new programs to better connect the playwriting community across counties, give resources for developing creative practice, and building the wealth of talent the region has to offer.
Every person shared their own unique perspective in small groups and we ended with the entire group coming together for a larger discussion about practical next steps for HighTide. And of course, we made sure to have some social time to let everyone meet each other and begin those relationships now! We were overwhelmed by their generous and thoughtful contributions. As we ponder, plan and dream up the next steps, we look forward to sharing those findings with you very soon!
