Clare Slater, Artistic Director, says “I am delighted to have commissioned four of the best storytellers in the East to share an evening of fiercely contemporary ghost stories. Through music, song and story, Ghost Stories by Candlelight celebrates the people, landscape and fragile natural world of our region. We can’t wait to tour it far and wide across East Anglia – the home of the ghost story – and then transfer it to the stunning Sam Wanamaker Playhouse in London during their 10 year anniversary season.”

And here’s what our four wonderful, East of England writers are saying:

“I have loved ghost stories ever since I was little. It is one of the most accessible forms of storytelling. This piece is a spooky celebration of East-based artists, culture and our landscape; it’s a rare and beautiful thing for an East voice to be at the forefront, let alone four of us. With this project HighTide has created something special, and we can’t wait to share it!”  Essex playwright, Kelly Jones

“I’m so excited to unveil my ghost story folk ballad as part of Ghost Stories by Candlelight. Song and music are a perfect medium for scary tales.  It’s thrilling to weave my work amongst stories from such a talented group to create a piece of accessible, spine-tingling theatre which is deeply rooted in our region.”  Norwich-based folk musician, Georgia Shackleton

“I love the aesthetics of blending ghosts, spirits and myths. It’s a chance to riff on East Anglia’s rich weave of ghost stories with a modern, twisted, Suffolk take. As a writer with an Indian heritage, it’s hard to get the chance to write a rural story because that’s not what the industry wants from me.  But I’m getting to do it now!”  Ipswich-based playwright, Shamser Sinha

“I’m so excited to be one of the writers for this beautiful production. Not only will we give audiences a night of suspense and spooks at the theatre but the work as a whole has, at its core, an awareness of nature that speaks powerfully to our times.”  Colchester-based playwright and HighTide/Peggy Ramsay Foundation writer in residence, Nicola Werenowska

Ghost Stories by Candlelight will be directed by Elayce Ismail.
